The walk

From one sentence to the sky

Fifteen steps. One page each. Each ends with what it predicts, what would kill it, and the paper.

  1. You are reading thisOne record exists. Deny it, and the denial is a record.
  2. Four things had to be trueFor one sentence to be read, four things must already be true. Symmetry. Break. Record. Constraint.
  3. One reality, one nowA record made in one place is read in another. So there is one reality. Every record is read now. So there is one now.
  4. The lineThe four conditions, written as one line. A balanced pair. One break, held. At the now. A flow out and back around it.
  5. The one number taken from the worldThe flow has a rate. Physics has measured it for a century and calls it the fine-structure constant, α. It is the only number the walk takes from measurement.
  6. Three directionsFour conditions give four directions a record can differ in. One is time. Three are space.
  7. Twenty-oneOne grain, read six ways, each held through three directions: eighteen. The now writes once in each direction: three. Twenty-one. A count, not a fit.
  8. The protonThe proton weighs what it weighs because of the count. Twenty-one gives the whole number. The leak gives the rest.
  9. GravityGravity is weak because a grain must pass all twenty-one gates at once. Each gate is worth the grip. Twenty-one grips, multiplied.
  10. The neutronA neutron holds a difference open. Holding costs. Priced, the neutron lands on the measurement. Unpriced, it died, and it is shown.
  11. What the universe is made ofOf the twenty-one channels, one makes light. Twenty are dark, ten and ten. The visible share is one in twenty-one. A clock splits the dark.
  12. The age of the universeOne cycle. A reader who is aware measures about one cycle of the record.
  13. The expansion rateThe shares and the age fix the rate. Arithmetic, not a choice. It lands on the oldest light’s side of the argument. An earlier rate died, and it is shown.
  14. The number that does not moveThe grip is the same at every place and every age. A null — and the switch that fires if it is not.
  15. The scoreboard and the calendarEvery number, where it stands today. And when nature answers next.
