From one sentence to the sky · Step 7 of 15
Twenty-one
One grain, read six ways, each held through three directions: eighteen. The now writes once in each direction: three. Twenty-one. A count, not a fit.
The grain can be read six ways. Its mass. Its gravity. Light, how fast its news travels. Its resistance, the stiffness of what it is made of. Its grip. And time.
Four of these read the grain that has landed. One reads the holding: the grip. One is the record of the hold: time. Six readings. One grain.
Each reading is held through each of the three directions. Six times three. Eighteen.
Then the writing. To write a record is to place it somewhere. Somewhere is an address in three directions. One coupling of the now to each. Three.
Eighteen held. Three written. Twenty-one.
Not twenty-two. Time is not a direction the now writes into. Time is what the hold leaves behind.
Up to here, physics has not entered. No mass has been weighed. No constant has been looked up. The six readings enter by name, never by value.
Now try to move it. Put any other whole number from fourteen to twenty-eight where the twenty-one goes. Only one lands on all three measurements this walk is going to: the proton, gravity, and the visible share of the universe. It is twenty-one. One step either way, and gravity is wrong by a factor of 137.
And the work ran the search a doubter would run, against itself. Thousands of short formulas can hit the proton’s number. Not one of them carries a second number. The twenty-one carries three.
What it stands on
What it predicts
The integer cannot move. Every number further down uses it, unchanged.
What would kill it
A seventh reading of the grain. A different count of the six. Any other count of the channels. The writing shown to need a coupling to time. The twenty-one gates shown not to be independent. A rival that carries three measurements out of one integer.
